HTS: Guide to Heat Treating Steel for knife and tool makers

Temps Guide

440C Stainless Steel Goal hardness - 58 Rockwell:

Heat to - 1880F Soak 15mins and quench. Temper at 225F for 2hours once

CPM440V Stainless Steel (S60V) Goal hardness - 58 Rockwell:

Heat to - 1950F Soak 30mins and quench. Temper at 300F for 2hours twice
_______________________________________________________________

5160 Spring Steel Goal hardness - 60-62 Rockwell

Heat to - 1525F and quench. Soaking not required. Temper at 300F
for 1 or 2 hours (optional)

Note: 60-62 Rockwell is the approximate as quenched hardness
tempering will lower it

154CM Stainless Steel Goal hardness - 58-61 Rockwell:

Heat to - 1900F Soak 15mins and quench. Tempering at 400F for
2hours twice = 58 Rc. Tempering at 275F for 2hours twice = 61Rc

1085 carbon Steel Goal hardness - 60-62 Rockwell:

Heat to - 1450F Soak 15 - 20mins and quench. Temper at 375F for 2hours once_______________________________________________________

_____
Note: Pre quench soak times can very to some degree. However, commonly one can figure about 1 hour of soak at hardening temperature per inch of steel thickness
i.e:
1 inch = 1hour

1/2 inch = 30mins

1/4 inch = 15mins

1/8inch = 7.5mins
